tracing european bodies

Linda Lapiņa, Roskilde University Notes [1] The spellings of europe and european bodies in this text are inspired by an editorial by Anika Keinz and Pawel Lewicki from AJEC (2019) where the authors use small letters for european and the eu (European Union) and italicise the terms white and whiteness in order to interrupt the …

Hitchhiking: Cultural Inroads

Hitchhiking: Cultural Inroads

by Patrick Laviolette

There have been four books on hitchhiking published in as many years. The thing is, two of these have been history overviews from North America (Mahood 2018; Reid 2020) and the other a personal account of thumbing rides around Europe in order to visit as many countries as possible in as short a time as can be achieved (Ipavec 2020). As a result my own monograph on this activity, Hitchhiking: Cultural Inroads, is the first contemporary account within the social sciences to holistically examine the meaning of hitchhiking in Europe at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. This short Blog posting gives a general summary to the volume, which is now available as a hardback or E-book and will be published in paperback next year.

For David Graeber

For David Graeber

Theodoros Rakopoulos

David Graeber was a fiery mind and a fascinating man. He was one of the few intellectuals of our time to link activist practice with high-level analysis throughout his career. I had the pleasure of doing my PhD under his supervision the years he spent at Goldsmiths (2008-2013), before he headed for the LSE (2013-2020). …

Nourishing the Nation: Food as National Identity in Catalonia

Nourishing the Nation: Food as National Identity in Catalonia

By Venetia Johannes

In my ethnographic monograph, Nourishing the Nation: Food as National Identity in Catalonia (Berghahn Books, published 2019), I explore the everyday experience of national identity in Catalonia through the lens of food. As an everyday object of consumption, food provides unique insight into the lived realities of Catalan nationalism, and how Catalans experience and express their national identity in light of recent events, such as the rise in support for secessionist politics and changing identity politics in Spain as a whole. Here I would like to discuss some of my motivations for studying the topic and my approach, and my aims with the book.

Świebodzin’s statue of Jesus: sacred space or tourist destination?

Świebodzin’s statue of Jesus: sacred space or tourist destination?

By Robert Parkin

I have been visiting western Poland for the past quarter of a century and more, partly for personal reasons, partly to do research especially on politics and identity in what until WWII had been a German region. My base while there has been Świebodzin, a small town of about 21,000 people situated roughly in the …

Béla Tarr’s Masterclass at the Film Museum, Vienna, Austria (June 9th, 2019)

By Işıl Karataş

The Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr[1], – entered the extremely warm and almost full screening room of the Film Museum in Vienna with a broken arm, and started his almost two-hour long masterclass by saying ‘Let’s talk’. The manifesto-like, genuine conversation moderated by journalist Patrick Holzapfel began there. Tarr came to Vienna for his latest installation film, …
