In honour of Professor Dame Mary Douglas and Professor Sir Raymond Firth, virtual get-together on Thursday, 25 March 2021
This Thursday, 25 March from 7:00 to 8:45pm GMT, two of our ‘Anthropological Ancestors’ — Mary Douglas and Raymond Firth — would have hit the centenary and the centenary + one-fifth mark.
It’s not been a year with much to celebrate, so let’s rectify this Thursday evening, even if only online. As a result, a few colleagues have agreed to say a few words in an informal and impromptu session; to reminisce on the intellectual and overall influence that either or both figures have had on their careers and thoughts. This isn’t meant to be the Annual MD Seminar or the ASA Firth Lecture. Rather, the idea is for a virtual evening get-together. So we’re aiming for a ‘night in the pub’ feel, with some time for Q&A and other brief interventions.
Our list of presenters (comprising seven slots of max. 10 mins each) should run as follows: Henrietta Moore; Jonathan Benthall; Aleksandar Bošković; Sarah Green; Adam Kuper; Paul Richards & Perri 6 (jointly); and Marion Berghahn.
